Gym Clothes With Meaning: Cree Words for Training Days

XUSI started where Indigenous identity and fitness meet. These are the Cree words we train in.

Fitness is part of how XUSI started. The gym is where discipline gets built, and we wanted clothing that carried that same discipline in our own language. These are the Cree words on the XUSI pieces made for training days.

âhkamêyimow: keep going

âhkamêyimow means to persevere, to keep going, to push through. The story we wrote for it is about our people pushing forward through cold, hunger and uncertainty, and that strength living in us today. It is on the Âhkamêyimow T-Shirt.

sôhkahpinêw: endure

sôhkahpinêw means to be resilient, to endure pain with inner strength. It is the word for the days that test your body and your mind, on the Sôhkahpinêw Wolf T-Shirt. Read the story behind the Wolf tee.

sôhkahtwâwin: resilience

sôhkahtwâwin, resilience, is on the Resilience T-Shirt, inspired by the dancer who keeps moving as the rhythm gets faster.

What to train in

  • Heavy lifting: our standard tees are 100% cotton with a heavy, sturdy feel and a generous fit, so they move with you.
  • Classic gym look: the Golden Era ringer is a lighter cotton-poly blend with contrast trim and a classic fit.
  • Cold mornings: layer a hoodie or crewneck over your tee.

Why language on training gear?

Cree is a living language. Wearing it where people train, lift and compete keeps it visible, starts conversations and gives the words daily use. Every meaning is on our Meanings page, and we ship across Canada from Saskatoon.

Finding your fit

For training, most people want room in the shoulders and chest. Our standard tees are cut generous, so your usual size gives a relaxed fit. Size down for a closer fit, or check the size guide. The women's baby rib tees are slim and sit close to the body.

Keep your training tees in shape

Gym shirts get washed often. Wash cold, inside out, and hang to dry. Read our guide to washing screen-printed t-shirts.
